Best Vitamins and Supplements to Reverse Neuropathy

Dr. Donald Kennedy of Maitland, FL has been a geriatric physician for the last 35 years.  He went back to school to get a separate business degree.  He has authored two books, filmed his own documentary and still finds time to surf almost every day at age 68.

Dr. Kennedy understands what’s really important when it comes to medicine . . . healing the body from the inside out.  Not with drugs or medications that mask the symptoms, but by dealing with the root of the issue.  He’s based his whole 35-year practice on that.

And while no, he’s not against medications (and believes there is a place for them in every comprehensive plan), they’re not the “one-stop fix it” that many doctors treat them as. Considering he’s still surfing nearly every day at age 68, I’d say it’s been working pretty well for him.

Dr. Kennedy mentions a specific product he recommends for nerve regeneration.  We will look at that product later, but first, it is important to understand in detail what vitamins and supplements can help reverse diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

What are the Best Vitamins and Supplements for Neuropathy?

Dr. Alan Mandell, another doctor, is a widely respected healthcare educator who has almost 2,000,000 followers of his Youtube Channel worldwide.

Dr. Mandell outlines what he believes are the best vitamins and supplements for neuropathy in a video called Healing Your Painful & Unhealthy Nerves With Nutritional Supplementation.

While his list of multivitamins, supplements and herbs may not be perfect, I believe it is a good place to start.

He says the daily requirements for nerve regeneration should include:

  • Vitamin D3  (1,000 IU to 5,000 IU)  *
  • Vitamin B12 Cobalamin (1,000 mcg to 2,500 mcg)  *
  • Other B Vitamins (B1, B2, B5, B6)  *
  • Magnesium (400mg to 600 mg)
  • CoQ10 (as directed)
  • Alpha-lipoic acid (600mg to 1,200mg)  *
  • Skullcap (as directed)  *
  • Feverfew (450mg or as directed)  *
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (1,000 mg to 2,000 mg)
  • Valerian Root (300 mg to 600 mg)
  • Turmeric (as directed)

Dr. Mandell is of course only one doctor.  Other doctors have other opinions about what is the best vitamin. Nutritional supplements for neuropathy do however, nearly always include the B and D vitamins and Alpha-lipoic acid.

I am not going to write about each of Dr. Mandell’s recommendations.  There are entire books that do that.  I will add a few notes I have discovered in my personal research.

Vitamin B Supplements – The Neuropathy Reversers

B Vitamins are vital for our nervous systems.

One possible common cause of peripheral neuropathy is a chronic deficiency of Vitamin B12, also called Cobalamine or Cobalamin.

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy usually affects both sides of the body at the same time. The damage to sensory fibers often causes burning sensations, tingling, numbness and nerve pain.  Mainstream medicine generally addresses eliminating the pain, but a holistic approach should involve addressing the root cause of the problem.

Here’s the Truth About Curing Your Diabetes!

——————————————————————————————

Treatment should include increasing the intake of B12. Oral B12 and injections are options.  Correcting vitamin B12 deficiency can help eliminate pain by restoring nerve sheaths and regenerating nerve cells.

There are two different kinds of Cobalamine . . .  Cyanocobalamine and Methylcobalamine.

Most forms of B12 have notoriously low absorption rates. So even if you take a B12 supplement daily, much of it never actually gets in your system. This means your nerves aren’t getting the B12 they need.

Methylcobalamine or methyl-B12 has a clinically proven higher success rate.  Multiple clinical studies have observed that not only does it absorb better – but taken in high dosages it may even regenerate damaged nerves.

Once I began taking more than 4,000 mcg of Methylcobalamine daily, along with 1,000 IU of D3 and 600 mg of benfotiamine I noticed improvement in my diabetic peripheral neuropathy symptoms in a matter of days.

Vitamin D Supplements – The Regulators and Protectors

Dr. Mandell states that most people have a Vitamin D deficiency.  He also says if you are feeling tingling, the first thing he would do is increase Vitamin D intake.

It is interesting to note Dr. Mandell talked about Vitamin D before any other supplements.  If you really want to get a lesson in vitamin and supplement nutrition you may watch his entire presentation at Healing Your Painful & Unhealthy Nerves With Nutritional Supplementation.

All Natural Vitamins and Supplements vs. Synthetics

VITA means life. Vita defines the difference between synthetic and what is known as naturally occurring.

Putting the word “natural” on the supplement label is, in most cases today, deceiving. The word is constantly misused and its meaning holds little value. “Natural” vitamins and supplements are generally not organic vitamins and supplements.

On the other hand, the term “naturally occurring” on a label means plant-based vitamins and supplements are completely derived from compounds of naturally-occurring sources rather than merely containing a naturally-occurring ingredient mixed with synthetic ingredients.

The best vitamin supplements are those with labeled potencies derived from naturally-occurring, full-spectrum food extracts.  According to one expert we researched (1) over 90% of the vitamins you purchase from the shelves of grocery stores are synthetics.

There are rare instances where synthetic supplements are favored over natural.  One is benfotiamine which we will discuss in a moment, but in general you should seek “naturally occuring” organic vitamins and supplements.

Discount Vitamins and Supplements – What to Know

Here are a few things to consider about discount online vitamins. Supplements being discounted is not the issue.  Vitamins being counterfeited is the problem.  In the United States and most Western countries, counterfeiting is not common if you buy from a reputable source.

Vitamins made in the USA are generally the least likely to be misrepresented. Vitamins imported from Asian countries should be checked out more thoroughly than domestically manufactured supplements.

Also, many complex products are specially developed for specific vitamin needs.  Check out the company’s reputation.  Look at product reviews for both the product and the company’s customer service.

Best Vitamin Supplement for Neuropathy

Nothing I write here should be taken as medical advice.  Like you, I have suffered from acute diabetic peripheral neuropathy.  This website chronicles my personal journey.  I am not a doctor so please consult your personal doctor about anything I write.

The best vitamin supplement for neuropathy is the one that works for you. The following product worked well for me.  After taking this product for a few months my diabetic peripheral neuropathy symptoms were almost entirely gone.  I will explain in detail why I believe in it so much.

Nerve Renew

I studied 30+ vitamin and supplement products before I discovered Nerve Renew.

Nerve Renew, unlike other products I reviewed, is focused like a laser on bringing pain relief and nerve regeneration to neuropathy sufferers.  This is the supplement Dr. Kennedy discussed in the opening video.

Ingredients

Nerve Renew is packed with vitamin B. So is their competition, but that’s where the similarity between their formula and most others ends.

Many neuropathy health supplements include the common form of vitamin B1 called thiamine. Your body has a difficult time absorbing thiamine. So when you take nutritional vitamin B1, you don’t get all of the wonderful nutrients your body needs to relieve neuropathy pain. Much of it moves right out of your body in your urine, without doing you a bit of good.

Benfotiamine

Instead of thiamine, Nerve Renew uses a form of vitamin B1 called benfotiamine.

This molecule has a unique open-ring structure that enables benfotiamine to successfully pass directly through cell membranes into the cell.

An important study in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology Therapy found the bioavailability of benfotiamine is 3.6 X higher than thiamine hydrochloride.

Whenever you take Nerve Renew, you will get more vitamin B delivered to your cells where it’s needed. With benfotiamine, the sustained increase of Thiamine Pyrophosphate (TPP) can produce beneficial effects on general nerve health, neuropathy, nephropathy, polyneuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, and coronary health for both diabetics and non-diabetics.

Additionally, benfotiamine is significantly less toxic than thiamine hydrochloride. Following decades of use by millions of people, there have been no undesirable effects reported related to the use of vitamin B-1.

There exists minimum to nil downside in trying benfotiamine and individual results have the potential to be very significant. The daily dosage of Nerve Renew contains 600mg with a 27,500% daily value rating established by the FDA. And, it’s fast-acting: a German research project found that benfotiamine can alleviate neuropathy pain within 3 weeks.

Methylcobalamine

Nerve Renew includes another potent B vitamin, B12 or methylcobalamin.

Methylcobalamine is absorbed and used more effectively than cyanocobalamin, the more common kind of vitamin B12 found in most supplements.

A study in the Journal of Neurological Science postulated that methylcobalamin could boost protein synthesis and help regrow nerves. Scientists claim that ultra-high doses of methylcobalamin have shown in clinical studies to produce nerve regeneration.

Taking this important vitamin in the correct dosage may result in the growth of new nerve cells! The daily dose of Nerve Renew contains 4000mcg of B12 with a 66,664% daily value rating.

Stabilized R-Alpha Lipoic Acid

100% Stabilized R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-ALA) can lead to substantial nerve pain reduction.

R-Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant that is both fat and water-soluble, which improves the function of cell “transporters” that carry and distribute glucose. R-ALA is also one of the few substances that can cross the blood/brain barrier to enter the brain and go directly where it is actually needed most.

Most significantly, R-ALA is the only antioxidant that has the unique ability to regenerate itself and other antioxidants such as B vitamins. Many studies, doctors and researchers have shown Stabilized R-ALA to be as much as 12 times as effective as the cheaper S-ALA found in most common Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements.

R-ALA also has a specific effect on nerves, which has been shown to soothe the burning, pain, and numbness associated with neuropathy. It stimulates better blood flow and oxygen to the nerves and promotes the entry of glucose, and the breakdown of it, into cells.

Sometimes known as “super antioxidant”, R-ALA can regenerate other antioxidants (e.g., B vitamins), combating free radicals which are a leading cause of nerve damage. The daily value rating has not been established by the FDA.

  • Researcher L.Androne found that “The antioxidant therapy with r-alpha-lipoic acid improves and may prevent diabetic neuropathy.”
  • “Treatment with R-ALA over 3 weeks is safe and effective in reducing symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy,” reports scientist FA Gries.
  • And scientist D. Ziegler states: “Oral treatment with R-Alpha Lipoic Acid for 5 weeks improved neuropathic symptoms.”

Nerve Renew’s Proprietary Blend of Natural Remedies

The Nerve Renew research team also found that the medical literature revealed there are quite a few herbal extracts that can reduce pain in general and nerve pain in particular.

Of these, the researchers, scientists and doctors formulated a proprietary blend of vitamins and herbal extracts and added it to Nerve Renew.

Vitamin B2 – Nerve Renew’s formula contains 8mg at 480% daily value
Vitamin B6 – 8mg at 400% daily value. Studies show that in small doses, B6 can be very beneficial for nerve health.
Vitamin D – 1000IU at 250% daily value
Feverfew extracts have numerous clinical studies suggesting they relieve pain and inflammation
Oat Straw extract helps to soothe itchy skin
Passionflower helps reduce stress and anxiety
Skullcap extract increases the blood supply to the brain and promotes a tranquilizing effect on the central nervous system
